Abstract: Novel bismaleimides containing phthalazine biphenyl (PPES-BMI) with different polymerization degrees were synthesized by the reaction of maleic anhydride with poly(aryl ether sulfone) prepolymer (PPES) containing phthalazinone prepared from 4-(4-hydroxypheny1)-2,3-phthalazine-1-one(DHPZ). The structure of PPES -BM1 was characterized by FT-IR and H-NMR spectra. The molecular weight and solubility of PPES-BMI were tested. The effect of different contents and polymerization degree of PPES—BMI on the thermo-mechanical properties of PPES—BMI/DGEBA blends were investigated by TGA and impact strength test. The results showed that the initial thermal decomposition temperature and the highest weight loss temperatures of the systems were increased with the increasing of PPES•BMI contents. The impact strength of PPES—BMI/DGEBA system with 35%PPES-BMI and DP=20 reached the maxmium and the increase amplitude was 75.8%.
